Annual Bioeconomy Survey 2024
11 June – 30 September 2024
Background
The establishment of the World Bioeconomy Association marks a pivotal moment in addressing the escalating global need for a unified platform dedicated to advancing the principles and practices of the bioeconomy. With the bioeconomy emerging as a key player in sustainable economic growth, there’s a pressing demand for cohesive efforts to propel its development forward. The Association serves as a nexus, bringing together a diverse array of stakeholders spanning public organisations, businesses, academia, government bodies, NGOs, and civil society representatives, all committed to driving progress in the bioeconomy.
The World Bioeconomy Association and its partners are building on findings from a survey conducted in 2023 that identified critical areas for global discussion, including:
- Information exchange and access: Highlighted as significant gaps in the bioeconomy landscape.
- Sustainability: Particularly in food, emphasising the global impacts and benefits.
- Biomaterials: Potential to disrupt traditional materials and foster new industries.
- Energy and biotechnology: Despite existing international platforms, gaps remain in broader bioeconomy conversations.
Why paradigm shift is important
The World Bioeconomy Association advocates for a paradigm shift within the bioeconomy, recognising the imperative to transition towards more sustainable and circular practices. By embracing three core visions – Bioresource, Biotechnology, and Bioecology – the Association underscores the multifaceted nature of the bioeconomy and the need for holistic approaches to its advancement. This paradigm shift fosters innovation, encourages responsible resource management, and promotes the integration of ecological processes into economic activities.
Emphasis on circularity
Prioritising responsible production and sustainable resource utilisation, the bioeconomy aims to minimise waste, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and mitigate environmental degradation. Aligning with circular economy principles not only enhances resource efficiency but also opens up new avenues for economic growth and job creation. This shift is essential for addressing 21st-century challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, food security, and public health.
Global engagement
The bioeconomy is gaining traction in various international forums. For example, Brazil, as the president of the G20, has launched a bioeconomy initiative (GIB) aimed at establishing High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy.
